Guardians of the Galaxy

As it's coming up to Christmas and students are getting a little ragged i decided to bow to their pressure and put a film on over a couple of classes. Obviously, I had to find a film appropriate to their age group and one which I would still be able to enjoy. I plumped for Guardians of The Galaxy.
It really is a wonderful movie.
Anyway, after the first class of watching the film I got students to go away and write 10 words that they related to the film. the next class I got them to predict the ending then after the last 20 minutes of the film we set about writing our reviews.
I decided that spoon feeding them some ideas first, using the words they'd provided, would help things run a little more smoothly.

Christmas homework is going to be students writing their own movie review from any of the films they watch over Christmas. Let's see how they do.

Upgrade Your Writing

There are many many ways to make sure your writing is up to the level it should be. One simple method is to use these two little worksheets cunningly pasted together. I've noticed a much more expressive nature coming into my students writing. It has been a real pleasure to read, which makes a change from the start of the year.
Neither of these worksheets are mine but I really love them and use them with all of my higher level classes.

I've added them to this link, Writing Help, as well so you can print them out and give them to your students at the drop of a hat.

I hope your students take full advantage of this as a number of mine have in the past. 

A Chic Approach to the Chaos of CH

Pronuncing ch: The sounds ch makes, 3 main groups: 

ch / tʃ/, sh /ʃ /, and k /k/

Here's an activity I took from my old man. I've been using it with my Advanced classes this week as I often notice huge mistakes with especially with the greek /k/ sound and the old french sound / tʃ/.  

There are various ways to go about this activity. I tend to start them off with one or two words for each of the following sounds  ch / tʃ/, sh /ʃ /, and k /k/ and then set them off making their own lists and see if they notice any patterns.

As I mention the sounds ch makes can be split into three main groups: ch / tʃ/, sh /ʃ /, and k /k/ (also the Q sound for choir). 

Then I introduce the following set of words. Either on a powerpoint or I  print the word lists in colour, laminate and cut into single words. This can take an awful lot of time so I do sometimes let m students loose with the scissors.

Next place all the words face up on the table and ask students to select and pronounce a word.

After a while the students realise that the colour of the word is a guide to pronunciation (it also helps many students remember the pronunciation).

Variations: Place the words face downwards and ask students to pick a word (against the clock/teams…… ) 

I also print a black and white copy so students can try doing the same activity a few weeks later and see how well they've remembered the groups.
